The Asia Smart App Awards 2018/2019 Hosted by WITA

The Asia Smart App Awards Summit was hosted by Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association (WTIA).  It was sponsored by CreateHK, and was held on June 20 at Cyberport (HKSAR run tech incubator).  The event was part of the Asia Smart App Awards 2018/2019 and which brought in hundreds of practitioners and prestigious guests.  These guests included the WTIA chairman Mr. Roy Law, representatives of co-organizing partners from 13 regions, Samsung, Hong Kong Science Park, and mobile app experts.

The Asia Smart App Awards recognizes the best mobile app developers in Asia.  It is now in its sixth this year. In addition, the event recognized the excellence of innovative smart app development.  In addition, the event provided a platform for top smart app experts from each region to meet, share, collaborate and learn from each other.  The event brought in outstanding experts from 13 regions.  They shared not only the latest trends in the mobile market in each region but also the prospects, analysis and direction setting for future mobile app operations.

Gathering the Industry’s Leading Figures

The event gathered the industry’s leading figures to share their insights and experiences in a rapidly growing technology world.  As well as seeking possible business opportunities and expanding business opportunities among app developers in Asia who are focusing on the Hong Kong mobile market.  Furthermore, they had the opportunity to obtain professional opinions and advice from professional evaluators and establish the basis for networking activation.

The evaluation committee of the Asia Smart App Awards consists of leading digital business experts.  These experts selected the most innovative and excellent mobile apps among the hundreds of entrants in three categories namely “Public Sector Distinction”, “Business and Commercial”, “Lifestyle, Social and Entertainment”.

“As the smartphone market of the younger generation in China increase, the importance of the smartphone market in China is growing, and global network cooperation within the mobile app market is important,” said Mr. Wong Tsz-wa, Tuspark HK’s general manager and final judging panelist.

Tuspark HK built the Hong Kong Startup Ecosystem.  Their focus is on cultivating projects, investing in ventures, and strategic acquisitions.

Another speaker and final judging panelist, Mr. Robert Lino Gantuangco, the Board of Director at Digital Commerce of the Philippines, shared his thoughts on Philippine’s digital market.  He suggested the importance of the system to build a friendly and secured e-commerce industry.  Furthermore, he stressed the need for a more solid market environment.

Roy LawClosing Remarks at the Summit

Mr. Roy Law, the chairman of WTIA made the closing remarks of the summit. He shared the trends in HK’s mobile app market.  He spoke about the growth of business applications and Android app growth and pointed out the difficulties in hiring engineers.  Also the problem of increasing the salary of engineers even with the profits of mobile app companies increasing. He also stated that more practitioners are considering overseas markets and should not underestimate the impact of trade conflicts in trade with overseas markets.

The Hong Kong Mobile Market

Hong Kong has the world’s No. 1 smartphone penetration rate.  The center of business around the world, and the smartphone app market is very active. As of July 2016, the number of smartphone users aged 10 and over in Hong Kong is 5,467,000 (According to the Hong Kong National Statistical Office).  This is 85.5% of the Hong Kong population.  Therefore it is the highest among the global smartphone penetration rates.

Hong Kong is getting bigger and bigger due to the advanced business infrastructure and the active support of the Hong Kong Investment Agency.  Among them, the smartphone app market is very active. Due to the characteristic of Hong Kong’s location, people can check the trends of start-ups in Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia.  Therefore they can meet a lot of Chinese start-up officials.  Especially in closely connected cities like Shenzhen.  Therefore the Hong Kong smartphone app market is an opportunity and strategy market for existing business users and start-up users.

Asia Smart App Awards Summit Award Presentation Ceremony 2018/2019

Ms. Jersey Yuen presented the awards to the winners.  She is the Assistant Head of Create Hong Kong of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.  Furthermore, the awards were in recognition and support of their contribution and outstanding performance in technological innovations.

Ms. Yuen congratulated the winners who received the awards and WTIA on successfully running the Asia Smart App Awards Summit Award Presentation Ceremony 2018/2019.

With the strict judging process, an independent judging panel consisting of leading local and international industry practitioners and experts, the nine award winners were first shortlisted by the initial jury from over 100 entries and then selected by the final jury for the Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Grand Award winners. All awardees truly deserve praise and recognition. I wish them all success.” said Mr. Roy Law, Chairman of WTIA

Notable guest Dr. Lawrence Cheung, the Chief Innovation Officer of Hong Kong Productivity Council was invited to the award presentation ceremony.  As well as, Vice Chairman of Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association, Ms. Ivy Chan, Head of Ecosystem and Collaboration of Cyberport, as well as Ms. Corinna Fung, Head of Corporate Marketing of GS1.

In order to recognize the distinguished achievements of industry practitioners, in the ceremony, the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) presented the “HKSTP Start-up Award” to UMix Music App.  In addition, Samsung presented “The Most Creative Award” to Birdie.

Wireless Technology Industry Association (WTIA) (established in 2001) is a non-profit, politically-neutral trade association dedicated to the wireless and mobile industry.  In addition, the Association acts as a platform, an aggregator, and a community for industry professionals.  There they can learn and drive emerging wireless and mobile technologies, governance, and standards. The Asia Smart App Awards (formerly known as the “Asian Smartphone App Contest”) aims to recognize the excellence of innovative smart app development.  In addition, they provide a platform for top smart app professionals in the region to meet, share, collaborate and learn from each other.
